This is the low-cost version of the Ella day and it covers most of the town's sights without the pre-dawn start the walking tours need.

The Mahameunawa Asapuwa is the stop nobody expects. It is a forest monastery rather than a decorated temple — quiet, unornamented and genuinely used — and after a week of painted Buddhist sites it lands very differently.

The Ella spice garden covers cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, turmeric and the Ayurvedic plants that grow in every village garden in this part of the country. Sri Lanka produces most of the world's true cinnamon and the difference between it and the cassia sold as cinnamon elsewhere is obvious once someone shows you both.

The Nine Arch Bridge is the centrepiece: 91 metres of stone, 24 metres above a gorge, built during the First World War without steel because the steel was requisitioned for Europe.

Ravana Falls, a broad cascade beside the road south, and the Flying Ravana zipline over the valley close the day.

What this does not include is Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock. If you want the walks, take a full day with an early start.
