Full description
Haputale sits at about 1,430 metres on a ridge with the plain falling away to the south, and Ella is four hundred metres lower and thirty kilometres east. Riding between them is almost entirely downhill, which is why this works as a day for people who are not cyclists.
The route runs on estate roads rather than the main highway. These are the roads built to move tea, they carry almost no traffic, and they contour along the hillsides rather than climbing over them — which means the views keep opening while the effort stays low.
What you pass is a working landscape rather than a scenic one. Pluckers on the slopes in the morning, line rooms where estate families have lived for generations, small factories, temples, and village shops where the ride stops for tea.
Haputale itself is worth the drive up. It is the least visited of the hill towns, its ridge position gives it a view that Nuwara Eliya does not have, and Lipton's Seat is above it.
Around thirty kilometres over about four hours of riding, with stops. Bikes and helmets are provided, and the vehicle follows for anyone who wants to stop pedalling.
