Full description
The road from Haputale up to Lipton's Seat climbs through the Dambatenne estate on a narrow lane of continuous switchbacks, and it is one of the few places where a tuk-tuk is genuinely the better vehicle. Open-sided, slow, and close enough to the tea that you can see the plucking happening on the slopes beside you.
Lipton's Seat sits at about 1,970 metres. Thomas Lipton bought his first Ceylon estates in 1890 and, the story goes, rode up to this outcrop to survey everything he owned. There is a statue of him at the top, looking out. On a clear morning the view runs across five provinces to the southern plain.
The operative word is morning. Cloud usually fills the valley by nine or ten and there is nothing to see at all, which is why this is a pre-dawn trip and not a lie-in.
Dambatenne, the factory Lipton built, is on the way back down and is one of the oldest working plants in Sri Lanka. The tour follows the leaf from withering trough through rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table, and ends with a cup.
Five hours, back in Ella by late morning.
