Full description
Little Adam's Peak is the reason a lot of people put Ella on a list, and it is one of the highest returns on effort in Sri Lanka: forty-five minutes on a mostly stepped path for a view out through the Ella Gap towards the southern plain, with tea on every slope in between.
The walk starts from the edge of town off the Passara road, climbs gently through estates on a made path, and finishes with a set of concrete steps. It is manageable for most fitness levels and for children, and the steps are the only real effort.
Going at dawn is not a preference. The path faces east, sunrise through the Gap is the whole point, the air is clearest in the morning in every month of the year, and by nine the summit is a queue for the same photograph. It is also fifteen degrees cooler at six than at ten.
A guide matters less for navigation here than at Ella Rock and more for the walking in the dark and for the parts most people miss — the summit is a series of connected knolls, and almost everyone stops at the first while the second and third are ten minutes on and considerably emptier.
Back in town for breakfast by eight, with the rest of the day intact.
Ella is a village at 1,040 metres in the southern hill country, reached by the train from Kandy that most people rate the finest railway journey in Asia, and its sights are all within a few kilometres: the Nine Arch Bridge, a brick viaduct of 1921 in a gorge of tea, which a train crosses several times a day; Little Adam's Peak, a 40-minute walk through tea to a ridge; Ella Rock, a harder three-hour climb; and Ravana Falls on the road down to Wellawaya. Mornings are clear and afternoons in the wet months bring cloud into the gap, so the walks are done early. Tuk-tuks are the transport, and every guesthouse can find one.

Traveler Reviews
Nuwa our tour guide was very knowledgeable with the surrounding areas, he knew the best spots for watching the sunrise and insta worthy photos!
We did not get water and the guide did not speak English. We could have just got a Tuktuk to drive us there as the hiking route was very easy to follow. The view was great. Nice to be picked up at the hotel.
I cancelled my trip. Very poor service. I didn’t get my refund 🙁
