Please note before booking: the Department of Wildlife Conservation has closed Blocks 1 and 2 of Yala National Park from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought, so safaris in those blocks cannot run on those dates. Blocks 3 to 6 stay open, and Udawalawe and Wilpattu are unaffected — for travel inside that window we will contact you to move the safari to one of those parks or to a date after 15 October. Udawalawe is the stronger park for elephants; Wilpattu has the quieter leopard sightings.
This is the private version of the Yala day, and what it buys is control over the four hours that matter.
On a shared jeep the driver works to a schedule and to the radio, which means chasing reported sightings across the block with nine other people. Privately you can sit at a waterhole for forty minutes, follow a track nobody else is on, or spend the morning on birds if that is what your group actually wants. Trackers work better when the vehicle is not in a hurry.
Yala Block 1 has the highest recorded leopard density on earth and, in season, around three hundred jeeps a morning. A private vehicle does not remove the crowd, but it does let you sit out the scrum at a sighting and wait for a quieter one.
The park also holds sloth bears — harder to see than leopards and, for most people who see one, the better memory — along with elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and over two hundred bird species.
This version returns to Ella rather than dropping on the coast, which suits anyone staying two nights in the hills.

Amazing safari experience with breathtaking scenery and an adventurous ride from start to finish. The first sighting of the leopard was awesome and truly an unforgettable experience. Our driver Muthu is very skilled, friendly, very patient in our elephant and leopard sightings and made the whole journey safe and enjoyable..

Dilan was our guide/driver. We were unlucky and couldn't see the leopards, but he tried so hard to search for it. We went at sunrise and unlike the other drivers, he immediatly started to search for the big cat, as he explained that in the early morning is easier to see them. Thanks to him we saw elephants, monkeys, deers, crocodiles, rare birds and even a Rusty spotted cat ( that is so rare to see, especially in daylight). I would do this experience again, and I would trust again Dilan.
I had a wonderful time! Our driver Janaka did a great job explaining the wildlife. We were lucky enough to see a leopard and many elephants. The park itself is beautiful and just a great place to spend the day. My only complaint: the minivan back to Ella had no seatbelts. All in all, highly recommended!
