This is the private version of the Yala day, and what it buys is control over the four hours that matter.

On a shared jeep the driver works to a schedule and to the radio, which means chasing reported sightings across the block with nine other people. Privately you can sit at a waterhole for forty minutes, follow a track nobody else is on, or spend the morning on birds if that is what your group actually wants. Trackers work better when the vehicle is not in a hurry.

Yala Block 1 has the highest recorded leopard density on earth and, in season, around three hundred jeeps a morning. A private vehicle does not remove the crowd, but it does let you sit out the scrum at a sighting and wait for a quieter one.

The park also holds sloth bears — harder to see than leopards and, for most people who see one, the better memory — along with elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and over two hundred bird species.

This version returns to Ella rather than dropping on the coast, which suits anyone staying two nights in the hills.
