Full description

Yala Block 1 holds the highest recorded density of leopards anywhere on earth, and on a busy morning in season it also holds around three hundred jeeps. Both things are true, and how you experience the park depends almost entirely on whether your vehicle is chasing the crowd or working around it.

A private jeep is what buys that choice. When a sighting is reported and thirty vehicles converge, you can sit it out and go somewhere quieter. When the tracker finds something on a side track, you can stay. Groups cannot do either.

The park is more than its leopards, and the private version is where that becomes obvious. Sloth bears are harder to see and, for most people who see one, the better memory. Elephants, water buffalo, mugger crocodiles at the waterholes, and over two hundred bird species with a heavy winter migration.

The drive from Ella is around two and a half hours each way, and the dawn game drive is the one that works — animals move at first light and shelter by nine.

Yala Block 1 closes for roughly a month each September. Check before booking around that window.
