Full description
Fourteen hours is the honest length of this day and it exists because the road from Ella to Yala passes both of the region's major waterfalls on the way down.
Ravana Falls is the first, a broad 25-metre cascade beside the road below Ella, named for the demon king of the Ramayana who is said to have hidden Sita in the caves above it. Diyaluma follows, and at 220 metres it is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, dropping off the escarpment in a single sheet and visible in full from the roadside.
Then the plain, and Yala. Block 1 holds the highest recorded density of leopards on earth, along with sloth bears, elephants, mugger crocodiles and over two hundred bird species. It also holds several hundred jeeps on a busy morning in season, and both facts belong in the same sentence.
The dawn game drive is the one that works — animals move at first light and shelter by nine.
The climb back into the hills takes the last three hours of the day. If fourteen hours sounds like too much, the version without the waterfalls is three hours shorter, and Udawalawe instead of Yala is shorter again.
