Yala and Udawalawe are ninety minutes apart and they are not the same experience. Doing both in a day is ambitious, and it makes sense for one specific reason: what each is good at is what the other is not.

Yala Block 1 has the highest recorded density of leopards anywhere on earth. It also has, on a busy morning in season, around three hundred jeeps, and the animals are in thorn scrub where they are hard to see. It is the leopard lottery, played with the best odds in the world.

Udawalawe is the opposite. Open grassland around a reservoir, around six hundred resident elephants with nowhere to hide, and sightings that are near-certain rather than lucky. Almost nobody sees a leopard here.

So: Yala at dawn, when the animals move, for the chance. Udawalawe in the afternoon, when the elephants come to water, for the certainty. Between them you also get sloth bears, buffalo, crocodiles and well over two hundred bird species.

Thirteen hours and two park permits, which makes this the most expensive day on this page. It suits people for whom wildlife is the reason they came to Sri Lanka, and nobody else.
