Full description
The road from Ella down towards Udawalawe drops about nine hundred metres in thirty-odd kilometres, and on a bicycle that is one of the more memorable descents in Sri Lanka. It is also a route almost nobody rides, because most people are in a car heading for a safari.
Ravana Falls opens the day, a broad cascade beside the road just below Ella, named for the demon king of the Ramayana said to have hidden Sita in the caves above it.
Then the escarpment. The road switchbacks down through forest and scrub, and the temperature climbs about fifteen degrees as you lose the altitude — you set off in a jacket and finish in a shirt. Below the escarpment the country flattens into paddy and smallholding land, and the riding turns from a descent into a gentle roll through villages where nothing is arranged for visitors.
A support vehicle follows the whole way, which matters on a route with this much gradient: anyone who wants to stop pedalling can, at any point.
Around thirty-five kilometres over about four hours of riding. Because it ends near Udawalawe, this pairs naturally with a safari the same afternoon or the next morning.
