Full description

Udawalawe is two hours south of Ella and it is the park to take if you want to see elephants rather than gamble on a leopard.

It was created in 1972 to protect the catchment of a new reservoir, and the farmland the water displaced became open grassland. That is the whole reason it works: there is nowhere for an elephant to hide, the roughly six hundred resident animals are usually in sight within twenty minutes of the gate, and sightings are near-certain rather than lucky. Yala, an hour further, has the leopards and three hundred jeeps to go with them.

Alongside the elephants: water buffalo, spotted deer, golden jackals, mugger crocodiles along the reservoir edge, and genuinely good birding — crested serpent eagles, changeable hawk-eagles, painted storks and a heavy winter migration.

The Elephant Transit Home on the park boundary is a rehabilitation centre rather than an orphanage, and the difference matters. Orphaned calves are raised with minimal human contact and released back into the wild in groups; several hundred have gone back. Feeding is viewed from a platform at a distance, with no riding, no bathing and no contact.
