Full description
Diyaluma drops 220 metres off the Uva escarpment in a single sheet and is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Almost everyone photographs it from the road below and drives on, which misses the entire point of the place.
The reason to come is the top. A steep path climbs about 45 minutes through rubber and scrub to a chain of natural rock pools on the lip of the fall, where the water collects before it goes over. Sitting in one of them with the plain spread out 220 metres below is one of the great swims in South Asia, and it is a genuine scramble rather than a walk.
The route up passes a series of smaller falls and pools that almost nobody stops at, and a guide is worth having for two reasons: the path branches and is not signed, and knowing which pool is safe on a given day is not something you can judge from a photograph.
The picnic on the mountain is the part that turns this from a hike into a day. You eat at the top, with the escarpment falling away, before walking back down in the afternoon.
About eight hours in total, four of them on foot.
