Full description
Yala sits southeast of Ella on the way to the coast, which makes the transfer day the sensible time to do it rather than a return trip from either end.
Block 1, the section most visitors see, has the highest recorded density of leopards on earth. That is a genuine statistic and it comes with a genuine crowd: on a busy morning in season three hundred jeeps work the same tracks, and a sighting draws vehicles in from across the block. It is the most likely place in the world to see a wild leopard, and it is not a quiet one.
The park is more than its leopards. Sloth bears, which are harder to see and arguably better, elephants, water buffalo, mugger crocodiles, and over two hundred bird species including large numbers of winter migrants.
The dawn drive is the one to take. Animals move at first light and shelter by nine, and the same park at eleven in the morning is largely empty of everything except jeeps.
After the drive it is around two hours to the coast, arriving early afternoon.
