Full description
Yala is about three hours south of Ella, down the Uva escarpment and out onto the dry coastal plain, and the change in landscape over that drive is one of the more dramatic in Sri Lanka: tea slopes at a thousand metres to thorn scrub at sea level in under three hours.
Block 1, the section open to most visitors, holds the highest recorded density of leopards anywhere in the world. That is a real statistic, and so is the crowd it brings — three hundred jeeps on a busy morning in season, converging whenever a sighting goes out on the radio.
The park rewards a wider interest. Sloth bears are harder to find than leopards and better when you do. Elephants, water buffalo, mugger crocodiles at the waterholes, and over two hundred bird species including a heavy winter migration from the north.
The dawn drive is the only one worth taking. Animals move at first light and shelter by nine, and by eleven the park is heat and vehicles.
Ravana Falls goes in on the climb back into the hills, which is a reasonable use of the last hour of a long day.
Yala Block 1 closes for roughly a month each September.
