Full description
Arugam Bay runs on the opposite calendar to the rest of the standard Sri Lankan route. Its season is roughly May to September — exactly when the southwest monsoon is churning the south and west coasts — which makes it the right destination for a European-summer trip that would otherwise be a compromise.
Getting there from Ella means crossing the southeast, and Yala sits on the way. That makes the transfer day the sensible time for the park rather than a return trip.
Block 1 holds the highest recorded density of leopards anywhere on earth, along with sloth bears, elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles and over two hundred bird species. On a busy morning in season it also holds around three hundred jeeps; both things are true.
The dawn drive is the only one worth taking — animals move at first light and shelter by nine.
After the park the road runs north up the coast through Panama to Arugam Bay and Pottuvil, and the landscape changes to dry scrub, lagoons and long empty beaches. The far end of this stretch borders Kumana National Park, which is one of the best birding areas in the country and almost never visited.
Outside the surf season much of Arugam Bay shuts and the waves go flat, so check your dates against that before booking.
