Full description
Ambuluwawa is the strangest structure in Sri Lanka. It is a 48-metre white spire on a hilltop above Gampola, built as a multi-religious monument with a Buddhist stupa, a Hindu kovil, a mosque and a church on the same site, and the tower itself narrows as it rises so that the staircase becomes a spiral clinging to the outside of the cone.
The climb is short and genuinely alarming. The steps narrow to about the width of one foot near the top and the handrail is waist-high with nothing beyond it. People with any fear of heights should stop partway, and there is no shame in it — the view from halfway is already worth the trip.
From the top you can see the Knuckles range, the hills around Kandy and, on a clear day, a long way south into the tea country. It is a 360-degree view from a point that stands well above everything around it.
The tea factory afterwards is the counterweight: a working plant taking the leaf through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing, ending with a tasting. Together they make a half day rather than a full one, which is useful on a day when you also want time in Kandy itself.
