Full description
Heeloya is a farming village in the hills east of Kandy, and this is the long version of the visit — ten hours rather than eight, with time to sit down between things rather than move from one activity to the next.
The morning is the land. You walk out through the paddy with a local host and the irrigation gets explained: the tank, the channels, the order in which fields take water. Sri Lanka has been running that system for two thousand years and it is a piece of engineering rather than a picturesque detail.
Organic cultivation is the other half. These are smallholdings, not estates, and the spice plots grow pepper, cardamom, turmeric and cinnamon in among the food crops rather than in monoculture rows, which is both how it has always been done and why the soil holds up.
Lunch is cooked in a village house with your help — coconut grated on a hiramanaya, spice paste ground on stone, clay pots on a wood fire — and eaten with the family that helped you make it.
The extra hours over the half-day version go into the afternoon: a bullock cart, a walk, and enough time that the day stops feeling like a schedule.
