Full description

Kandy changes after dark. The lake reflects the lit temple and the Queen's Hotel, the streets around the market keep working under strip lights, and the heat finally drops enough that people come out and stay out. It is a much better city to photograph at night than during the day, and much harder.

This is a two-hour walk with a photographer who shoots here. The technical side is the point: night street work is about handling low light, mixed colour temperature and movement all at once, and the difference between a usable frame and a blurred one is usually a decision about shutter speed made in a second. That gets taught on the street, on your own camera, rather than explained in the abstract.

The route covers the Queen's Hotel colonial facade, which is the most photographed building in Kandy and the one most people get wrong; the lakeside, where the reflections are; the night market, which is the hardest and most rewarding section; and the streets around the Temple of the Tooth.

Small groups, because street photography with a crowd does not work — people notice six cameras and stop behaving normally.
