Full description

The road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya climbs about 1,400 metres in 80 kilometres, and it is one of the best drives in Sri Lanka. Treating it as a transfer with stops rather than a point-to-point run is what turns three hours of switchbacks into the day itself.

You leave Kandy in the morning and begin at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, laid out on a loop of the Mahaweli river and holding a palm avenue, an orchid house and a Javan fig whose canopy covers most of a lawn. From there the road starts climbing through Gampola and Pussellawa, with a spice garden stop where cinnamon, cardamom and pepper are grown in the same plot and the difference between them is easier to see than to read about.

Ramboda Falls comes next, a 100-metre drop visible from the roadside and reachable on foot in a few minutes. Above it the landscape changes over about a kilometre from forest to tea, and the estates take over completely. A working factory visit follows the leaf from the withering troughs through rolling and oxidation to the grading table, and ends with a cup of the grade that never leaves the country.

You arrive in Nuwara Eliya in the afternoon with time to see the town, which the British built as a hill station and which still has the racecourse, the post office and the cold nights to show for it. Drop-off is in Nuwara Eliya, onward in Ella, or back in Kandy if you are not moving on.
