Full description

Kandy has been a woodworking town for as long as it has been a capital. The Temple of the Tooth, the old audience hall and the drummers' masks all come out of the same craft tradition, and there are still family workshops in and around the city where the work is done by hand rather than by machine.

This session starts with a demonstration. The artisan works through the tools — the chisels, the mallet, the way a design is transferred onto the blank — and explains what the recurring Kandyan motifs mean, because the lotus, the liya vela vine and the geometric borders are a vocabulary rather than decoration.

Then you make something. You are given a prepared blank, and with the artisan working alongside you, you carve a design and hand-paint it. Nobody expects a first attempt to be good, and the point is not to produce a saleable object — it is to spend a few hours doing with your hands what you have been photographing all week, and to find out how much slower and harder it is than it looks.

You keep what you make. All materials, tools and paints are provided, and the piece is small enough to travel home.
