Full description
This is the efficient version. Where the full-day trips pad the drive with waterfalls and tea factories, this one goes to Kitulgala, rafts the river, and comes back — about five and a half hours door to door, which leaves the rest of the day in Kandy intact.
The run covers five significant rapids and four smaller ones, graded 2 to 3. They have names, and the guides use them: Virgin's Breast, Killer Falls, Butter Crunch. None of them require experience, and each raft carries a guide who calls the strokes and handles the line through the water. Between the rapids the river flattens out and you can get out and swim, which on a hot day is half the reason people come.
Transport is an air-conditioned vehicle rather than a tuk-tuk, which matters on the two-hour drive each way and matters more if it rains. All safety equipment is provided and the briefing happens before anyone gets near the water.
