Full description
The Knuckles range is named for the way its peaks look like a clenched fist from Kandy, and it is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where you can walk for a day and not meet a tour group. It is a UNESCO-listed conservation area holding montane cloud forest, patana grassland and species that exist nowhere else — the range sits at the meeting point of the wet and dry zones, which is why the vegetation changes so sharply as you cross it.
The walk climbs through tea and secondary forest into the older forest above, where the trees carry moss and epiphytes and the cloud sits in the canopy for much of the morning. Birding here is good and the endemics are genuinely findable: yellow-eared bulbul, Sri Lanka white-eye, dusky-blue flycatcher.
Perumal Ella is the turning point, a waterfall with a pool at the base cold enough to be a shock and shallow enough to sit in. Most groups stop here for an hour.
Lunch is at a farmhouse in the range — rice and curry, cooked there, eaten there. The walk out follows a different line back down through the villages, so you are not retracing the morning.
