Full description

Doing the hill-country road by tuk-tuk is slower than by car and considerably better. The vehicle is open-sided, it moves at the pace of the scenery rather than past it, and on a road that climbs 1,400 metres through tea estates that turns out to matter.

The route runs up through Gampola and Pussellawa, stopping at Ramboda Falls, where a 100-metre drop is visible from the road and reachable on foot in a few minutes. Above it the forest ends and the tea begins, in the abrupt way it does on this road.

A working factory visit follows the leaf through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table. It takes about forty-five minutes and finishes with a tasting, and it is the single best explanation of why the same bush produces six different products.

Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 metres is the strangest town in Sri Lanka — the British built it as a hill station and it still has the racecourse, the golf course, the trout streams they stocked and a post office in mock Tudor. It is 15°C colder than Kandy, which after a day in an open tuk-tuk you will feel.
