Full description
Nuwara Eliya is called Little England, which is the kind of nickname that sounds like marketing until you get there and find a racecourse, a golf course, stocked trout streams, a mock-Tudor post office and hedges. The British built it as a place to escape the heat, at 1,900 metres, and it is still 15°C colder than anywhere on the coast.
The drive up is half the day. The road climbs through Gampola and Pussellawa, and Ramboda Falls is the first stop — a 100-metre drop a few minutes' walk from the road. Above it is the Bhakta Hanuman temple, one of a chain of Ramayana sites across the hill country and busy with Indian pilgrims rather than tourists.
A tea plantation and factory visit follows, taking the leaf from the field through withering, rolling, oxidation and firing to the grading table.
In Nuwara Eliya itself there is Gregory Lake, Victoria Park, the colonial buildings, and time to walk. Lunch is included, which on a day this long is worth more than it sounds. Then the descent, reaching Kandy in the evening.
