Full description
This is the short version of the carving workshop, and it exists for a specific reason: an afternoon in Kandy is often already spoken for, and an hour is enough to actually make something.
The artisan starts with a demonstration — the chisels, the mallet, how a design gets transferred onto a blank, and what the recurring Kandyan motifs mean. The lotus, the liya vela vine and the geometric borders are a vocabulary that runs through everything from temple doors to dance masks, and ten minutes of explanation changes how you look at the rest of Kandy.
Then you carve. You are given a prepared blank and the tools, and the artisan works alongside you correcting rather than taking over. An hour is enough for a small piece, which you keep.
Tuk-tuk transfers from your hotel are included, which matters because the workshops are in the craft streets rather than on the tourist route and are not easy to find on your own.
