Full description
The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are 60 hectares inside a loop of the Mahaweli river, laid out formally in 1821 on ground that had been a royal garden since the fourteenth century. They photograph well and most visitors photograph them badly, because the light under a closed canopy is difficult and the scale of the trees is almost impossible to convey.
That is what this walk is for. A working photographer takes you round the parts of the garden that actually reward a camera — the Cabbage Palm Avenue, planted in 1905 and running arrow-straight for a couple of hundred metres; the orchid house; the Cook pines; and the Javan fig, a single tree whose canopy covers about 2,500 square metres of lawn and which nobody photographs well by accident.
The teaching is practical rather than theoretical: where to stand, what the light is doing under the canopy, how to handle the contrast between shade and the sky, and how to give a very large tree a sense of scale. It works with a phone as well as with a camera, and the photographer will work with whatever you have.
Three hours, small groups, and you leave with photographs rather than snapshots.
