Full description

Sri Lanka is a small island that takes a long time to cross. The roads out of Kandy climb, twist and share space with buses, tuk-tuks and the occasional herd of cattle, and the public timetable rarely lines up with when you actually want to leave. This is the simple fix: a private car and driver that collects you from your Kandy hotel and takes you straight to your next base, with nobody else on board.

The route is yours to choose. Ella and Nuwara Eliya climb further into tea country. Mirissa, Arugam Bay and the southern beaches drop down to the coast. Yala runs east toward the dry-zone parks, Trincomalee north to the harbour town on the east coast, and Colombo west to the capital and the airport. Journey times differ enormously between these — a hill-country hop is a few hours, while the run to Arugam Bay or Trincomalee eats most of a day — so confirm your destination when you book and the operator will tell you what to expect.

Your driver knows where the sensible stops are: a tea factory on the Ramboda road, a viewpoint over the valley, a rest house for lunch, a roadside stall selling curd and treacle. Ask and they will pull over. If you would rather push straight through, say so and they will. That flexibility is the real difference between a private transfer and a bus seat.

The vehicle is air-conditioned and there is room for luggage, which matters if you are moving hotels with full bags. Child seats and larger vehicles for bigger parties can usually be arranged with notice.

Because destinations vary so widely, treat this as a transport service with a knowledgeable local at the wheel rather than a fixed sightseeing tour. Tell the operator your pickup time, your drop-off address and any stops you want, and they will build the day around it.

I had the pleasure of doing a private city tour in Kandy with Rasidu, and I can confidently say he is one of the best tour guides I’ve ever met. From the moment the tour began, he was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and well-prepared. The way he explained the history and cultural background of each place was clear, engaging, and full of passion you could tell he genuinely loves what he does. What stood out most was how kind and attentive he was. He didn’t just take me around; he truly listened to what I wanted to see and customized the experience based on my interests. Rasidu made me feel completely comfortable and welcomed, almost like I was with a close family member rather than a tour guide. His warm personality and respectful nature made the entire experience not just informative, but truly memorable. If you’re visiting Kandy and want a guide who is informative, friendly, and genuinely cares about giving you a great experience, I highly recommend booking a tour with Rasidu.

Tharanga was super friendly and explained everything and answered all our questions. He even asked if we were interested in seeing extra things apart from the list and ended spending the whole day with us (10hrs instead of 6hrs!!). Highly recommended!

I had Danushka as my driver. He drove us around in his beautiful tuctuc. The tour was fun and I saw a few things you only see if a local shows you the way, that was fun. We didn't see any really famous things, just the botanical garden. I thought I'd see more well-known things, but I guess that's my fault. Also, a really nice driver and super helpful.

Tharanga is very kind and really takes his time to show you around and explain about Sri Lanka culture. I 100% recommend if you wanna see the city and get the tuk tuk experience and not only see touristy places!

December to March is the driest stretch. Colombo sits on the west coast, so it gets the southwest monsoon roughly May to September — the northeast monsoon (October to January) hits the *other* side of the island instead. Any guide describing one national "rainy season" is only describing half the country. Full breakdown in our best time to visit Colombo guide.
Tuk-tuks are everywhere — insist on the meter or agree the fare first. PickMe is the local ride-hailing app and usually cheaper than flagging one down, with no fare argument. The coastal railway south toward Galle runs along the sea and costs very little. See getting around Colombo.
Rice and curry is the everyday meal, not a dish — rice with several curries and sambols. Kottu roti is chopped roti cooked with a distinctive clanging rhythm on the griddle, hoppers are bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, and lamprais is the Dutch Burgher dish baked in a banana leaf. See the Colombo food guide.
Pettah is the market district east of Fort, and its streets are organised by trade — one for electronics, one for textiles, one for hardware, one for spices. The candy-striped Red Mosque (Jami Ul-Alfar, 1908) is the landmark. Street-by-street in our Pettah market guide.
Galle is the easiest — about 2 hours on the southern expressway. Kandy is only 115 km but 3-4 hours each way on a mountain road. Sigiriya is realistically a 12-14 hour day and is better as an overnight. Honest distances in our day trips from Colombo guide.
Two days covers it comfortably. Colombo is not a museum city and most travellers pass through on the way somewhere else — our Colombo 2-day itinerary sets out a realistic pair of days.
