Full description
Moving from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is only about eighty kilometres, but the road climbs close to two thousand metres and takes most of a morning to do it. Rather than treat that as dead time, this private trip uses the drive as the day out — the same road, but with the stops that make the climb worth it.
You leave Kandy after breakfast and follow the A5 north-east, watching the landscape change as you gain height. Village gardens give way to jungle, then to the clipped green terraces of tea. At Ramboda the waterfall drops in tiers beside the road; there is a viewpoint and, if the water is high after rain, a good deal of spray.
Further up you stop at a working tea estate. Sri Lanka's hill-country tea industry dates to the 1860s, when planters replaced a collapsed coffee crop with camellia, and much of the equipment in these factories is still the original British machinery. You see the leaf being withered on long troughs, rolled, oxidised and fired, and you finish with a cup of the grade that comes off that line.
Nuwara Eliya itself is unlike anywhere else on the island. Sitting at over 1,800 metres, it is genuinely cold at night, and the town kept its hill-station bones — a golf course, a racecourse, brick and half-timbered buildings, and hedgerows that look transplanted. Gregory Lake sits at its edge with a walking path around it.
The trip runs roughly six and a half hours door to door and finishes at your Nuwara Eliya hotel. It works well as the travel day between the Cultural Triangle and the hills, and it saves you from a crowded bus on a very winding road.

We had a great day with Rumesh; the various things to do were very interesting. Rumesh was able to answer our various questions. We made it to Nuwara Eliya safely!
We had a wonderful journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya with our guide Saman and we can't recommend him enough. Saman is a very nice, friendly and cooperative person. From the beginning he was so flexible - he changed and adjusted the itinerary completely as we wanted, without any hesitation. That made our trip so comfortable and stress-free. On the way he took us to beautiful places like Ramboda Falls, which was breathtaking, a lovely tea plantation where we learned about the whole tea-making process, and the famous Nuwara Eliya Post Office and city tour. He knows all the best spots for photos and never rushed us at any place. He gave us enough time to enjoy, take pictures and relax. He is a very safe driver, especially on the winding hills towards Nuwara Eliya, his tuk tuk was clean and comfortable, and he was very professional throughout. If you are planning to travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, just contact Saman. He will make your journey memorable. Highly recommended!
I absolutely recommend the transfer from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya with them: along the way, you'll have the opportunity to admire beautiful panoramic landscapes and learn about tea production firsthand by visiting one of the factories that is still in operation today. Ask for Tharanga as your driver: she was one of the kindest, most helpful, and lovable people we met during our trip to Sri Lanka. An experience that we highly recommend!
Had a really nice day. Saw and did a lot. Definitely worth the money!
Mahesh was very professional driving and showed us the various places agreed upon in the itinerary. Thank you!
The tour from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya was perfect, thanks to our guide Kumara! We passed by the Spice Garden, the Gem Museum, and numerous viewpoints and waterfalls! We stopped for lunch at Chill Ramboda, a great restaurant with incredible views! A big thank you to Kumara, who was exceptional!
We really enjoyed the tour. Mahesh not only drove us to the landmarks, but also explained and showed us an incredible amount, and thus managed to teach us a lot of new things in one day. We always had enough time; there was no rushing, even when it got later than expected. We felt safe and would like to travel with him again in Sri Lanka.
After a couple of hiccups (my fault) which our driver quickly resolved for me, the trip was great. the driver was polite and kind, no rushing g me as I am 70 years old. He helped me with steps which was appreciated. The scenery was very beautiful. I highly recommend this tour.
We had an excellent experience on the Kandy to Nuwara Eliya drop tour. The journey was comfortable, well organized, and filled with beautiful scenery along the way. Our driver Maresh was punctual, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area. We had the opportunity to visit several interesting attractions and viewpoints, and there was enough time to enjoy each stop without feeling rushed. The vehicle was clean and comfortable, making the trip relaxing and enjoyable. The tour was a perfect combination of transportation and sightseeing, allowing us to experience some of the most beautiful parts of Sri Lanka during the journey.
Had such a great experience on this trip. My guide Rumesh genuinely could not do enough for me, stopping at any time along the way when I asked, giving great tips and recommendations for my next destination and he even went out of his way to drop me to the Ambewela train station and waited with me until I got my ticket. He completely tailored the experience for me after finding out I had already done some of the tours that were on the route. He definitely made my experience and I would recommend this trip to anyone looking to experience culture, history, a fantastic guide, and breathtaking scenery along the way!
