Full description

This is the full rapid section rather than the shortened one: five major rapids and four smaller ones, including the named drops the guides call out as you approach them. Run privately, it is a different day from the group version — your own raft, your own guide, and no waiting for a van of ten people to finish changing.

What the private booking actually buys is time on the water. Group trips run to a schedule set by the next group's start; a private raft can go back up and run a rapid again, stop longer in the flat sections to swim, or take the whole thing slowly. If you are travelling with children or with someone nervous about the water, that flexibility is worth more than it sounds.

The Kelani at Kitulgala is graded 2 to 3, which is beginner water with real force in it. The guides are qualified and the briefing covers paddle commands and swim position before anyone launches. Between rapids the river opens out and the current drops to nothing.

The drive from Kandy is two hours each way through Ginigathena and the tea country, and it is a good road for the scenery even without the river at the end of it.

We had already seen many of the sights on a different tour the day before, but that wasn't a problem. We started at a temple near Kandy and then drove to a large gemstone workshop. The highlight, of course, was the rafting trip. Although I've been rafting many times before, this was a new and exciting experience. To finish off the day, we visited a tea factory and were able to sample some of the tea. Our driver spoke excellent English and was very friendly. All in all, it was a wonderful day full of memorable experiences. We didn't do the optional canyoning tour, nor did we buy the SD card with the pictures and videos from the rafting trip.

Our driver and tour guide Sara was excellent. He spoke good English and our communication was good and clear even from the day before for confirmation. He made sure we had cold beers, excellent food with a spectacular view. The river rafting was great fun and not too challenging. The guide was great. We recommend this experience. We also went to a lovely tea factory with generous tea tasting and delicious iced Macha. Thank you Sara for your excellent Sri Lankan kindness and hospitality.

A pleasant trip with a very courteous driver. He made every effort to find restrooms, a bench, etc. The rafting was relatively easy, with no difficult sections. We were on the water for about 1 to 1.25 hours. A recommended additional excursion (about an hour for $20) is a hike to a tributary of the Kelani River, featuring a type of canyoning that includes jumping into the river from a height of 3 meters (with helmet and life jacket). We were able to customize the itinerary for the return trip. A lovely little tea factory with a generous tasting was also included. Thank you!

The rafting was great and challenging enough. It is a 1.5 hour drive from Kandy but you will find yourself in a fairytale environment on the water. Our guide Tara was great. Nothing was too much for him. He took us to a restaurant at the end of the day when we asked. The various sights in this tour are educational and fun to see. Be aware that this is a long day trip, where you will be in the car for large parts.

Fernando runs an absolutely amazing tour and is such a lovely bloke who is very knowledgeable. The white water rafting is so incredible it makes you forget about the rest of the day. The tea factory is very interesting. The wood carving store is fascinating to see the guys working and how its been passed down the generations. The herbal garden was a very unique experience and how all the natural products are made. We skipped over the rest of the day due to time but Fernando still offered to continue if we would like to. Would highly recommend a 10/10 experience.

The rafting was fun but was pretty short. The overall ride to get there took the longest

Time it for a puja — 5.30am, 9.30am or 6.30pm. Those are the only windows when the upper relic chamber opens and the hevisi drummers play; outside them you are visiting a beautiful building rather than a ceremony. Take socks: shoes come off at the gate and the stone courtyard gets painfully hot. Full detail in our Temple of the Tooth guide.
February for the clearest weather, or July-August, which is drier here than most people expect and covers the Esala Perahera. Kandy sits between Sri Lanka's *two* monsoons and catches some of both, so it has no long dry season — but it also never has a season that is a write-off. See best time to visit Kandy.
Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and sell out within hours from December to March. Unreserved 2nd/3rd class is sold on the day and always available — you will stand, which is where the open doorways and the famous photographs are. Sit on the right-hand side going south. Note there is no Nuwara Eliya station; the stop is Nanu Oya, 10 km away. See our Kandy to Ella train guide.
July or August — but the dates move every year with the lunar calendar, so any guide naming a fixed week is guessing. It runs ten nights and ends on the Nikini poya. Book accommodation on the route six to twelve months ahead. Details in our Esala Perahera guide.
Sigiriya and Dambulla (2.5 hrs each way) is the best of them. Kitulgala rafting is 2 hrs, the Knuckles range and Pekoe Trail stages are day hikes from here. Ella, Galle and Yala are *too far* — 4-6 hours each way. See day trips from Kandy.
Two nights. One full day for the town — Bahirawakanda, Peradeniya gardens, the lake and the evening puja — and a second for a hike, a village day or the cultural triangle. Our Kandy 2-day itinerary lays it out hour by hour.
The centre and the lake circuit are walkable. For anything up a hill or out of town, take a tuk-tuk — roughly LKR 100-150/km on the meter, and ride-hailing apps price it automatically with no negotiation. See getting around Kandy.
