Full description
Most Kandy city tours stay on the ring road and hit the same four stops. This one goes up first, into Wakarewatta on the hills above the town, where the forest and the tea come right to the road and the viewpoints look straight down onto the lake and the temple roofs.
A tuk-tuk is the right vehicle for it — the roads up are narrow, steep and full of switchbacks, and being open-sided at that height is most of the pleasure. Your driver is also the guide, which in Kandy tends to mean a genuinely local one who will stop wherever something is worth stopping for.
Lunch is a proper rice and curry — six or seven dishes served together rather than one — at a local place rather than a tourist restaurant.
The afternoon comes back down into the city: the Temple of the Tooth from the outside or in, the lakeside, the market, and the Bahirawakanda Buddha on the hill if there is time. It is a half day that covers both the quiet Kandy and the busy one, which is more than most full-day tours manage.
