Should You Book a Nuwara Eliya Tour Direct or Through an App?

Plenty of Nuwara Eliya drivers will tell you to book direct to skip platform fees, and every big app will tell you their vetting and support make booking through them safer. Both miss what actually matters: can you get a specific question answered by a real person before you pay?

A scenic transfer to Kandy or Sigiriya involves real logistics — luggage capacity for the drop, whether the tea-estate stop is a short photo stop or a proper tour. If nobody confirms those details until after you've paid, it doesn't matter whether you found the booking through a driver's own contact or a polished app — you're booking blind either way.

Booking direct with a verified local driver removes one real risk: a long reseller chain where your money and your question both pass through two or three middlemen before reaching the driver who actually does the transfer. That's genuinely worth avoiding.

It does not automatically mean cheaper, and it does not automatically mean safer. A number handed to you by a guesthouse is also "direct," and has none of the accountability of a platform that vets drivers and keeps a payment record you can point to if something goes wrong.

1. Message a specific question before paying. Ask something only someone who actually drives the route would know — luggage space, or how long the tea-estate and Dambulla stops actually last. A vague or delayed answer is the clearest red flag there is.

2. Ask what happens if the driver can't take your date. If a platform or driver can't give a straight answer on refunds before you've paid, that's not one to trust with your money.

3. Check who actually answers. A reply from a real person who clearly knows the route (not a templated bot message) is the strongest signal that someone will also answer you *after* you've paid, not just before.
