Full description
Minneriya's reservoir was built in the third century AD and it is the reason for one of the great wildlife spectacles in Asia. As the dry season progresses and the water elsewhere disappears, the reservoir bed becomes fresh grazing, and elephants converge on it from across the surrounding forest — a few hundred animals in one place, feeding, bathing and socialising. It is called the Gathering, and nothing else in Asia concentrates wild elephants like it.
The timing matters more than anything else. The Gathering builds through the dry months, roughly June to September, and in the wet season the herds disperse into the forest and the reservoir floods. Which park the jeep uses depends on where the animals actually are that week: Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park are all within half an hour of each other and operators move between them, which is why the booking names more than one.
Afternoon is the drive to take — the elephants come down to the water late in the day, and the light is better. Three hours in the park with a driver and tracker who work it daily.
Onward drop-off in Kandy or elsewhere can usually be arranged instead of a return, which makes this a good way to break a transfer day.
