Full description
This trip puts the two headline sites of Sri Lanka's cultural triangle into one long day, run privately with your own vehicle, driver-guide and included entrance fees so nothing has to be negotiated on the road.
Dambulla comes first. Five caves cut into the flank of a rock outcrop hold more than 150 Buddha statues along with painted ceilings that follow the natural curve of the stone, some of the surfaces repainted and repaired across a working history of more than two thousand years. It is a live temple, not a ruin, so shoes come off at the entrance and the climb up the steps is done barefoot on hot rock.
Sigiriya is the centrepiece. The 5th-century citadel of King Kassapa sits on a two-hundred-metre granite plug above the plain, reached by staircases that cut across the rock face. Partway up, a sheltered gallery still holds frescoes of the so-called cloud maidens, and above the lion's paws at the terrace the final flights lead to the summit palace foundations and the water gardens laid out symmetrically below. The climb is about twelve hundred steps, exposed and steep in places, with metal staircases bolted to the rock.
The village element breaks up the archaeology. It is a walk through cultivated land around Sigiriya with time for local snacks and a look at how rice and vegetable plots are worked, plus whatever wildlife the paddy edges turn up.
Now the honest part. Pickup is from the southwest coast at Balapitiya, and the drive north is roughly five hours each way, with a breakfast stop around Kurunegala. Counting the two sites, lunch at Habarana and the return, this runs to a twelve to fourteen hour day and most of it is spent in a vehicle. It works if you accept that; it does not work as a relaxed day.
