Full description

Sigiriya to Ella is one of the longer transfers in Sri Lanka and there are two ways to do it. The usual route goes via Kandy and takes six or seven hours of continuous bends. This one takes the eastern road through Mahiyanganaya and up the Uva escarpment, which is quieter, less driven and takes in something the Kandy road does not.

The Vedda are Sri Lanka's indigenous people, present on the island long before the Sinhalese arrival that the chronicles date to the fifth century BC. A few communities remain, mainly around Dambana near Mahiyanganaya, and a visit involves meeting members of the community, seeing the hunting and gathering techniques they still teach, and hearing their own account of a history that is usually told about them rather than by them.

Be clear-eyed about it. These visits are a livelihood and they are, to some degree, performed. That does not make them worthless — the community controls the presentation and the income stays local — but it is not an encounter with people untouched by the modern world, and anyone selling it as that is not being honest with you.

The road then climbs the escarpment into Uva and drops into Ella in the afternoon.

Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.
