Full description
The road from Sigiriya to Kandy runs through Matale, which has been a craft district for as long as Kandy has been a capital — the woodcarvers, the batik workshops and the brass workers supplied the court, and their descendants are still working the same streets.
This transfer is built around them rather than around the monuments. The Dambulla caves come first, because they are on the way and worth the stop, but the substance of the trip is the workshops: batik, where wax is drawn on cloth by hand and the fabric dyed around it, layer by layer, in a process that takes days for a single piece; and woodcarving, where the Kandyan motifs are cut into ebony and jak with hand tools.
Lunch is with a local family — rice and curry, six or seven dishes, cooked at home and eaten at their table. It is the part of the day people remember, and it is the reason this transfer takes four and a half hours instead of two.
You reach Kandy in the early afternoon with the rest of the day free.
