Full description
Wilpattu covers well over a thousand square kilometres of dry-zone forest north of Puttalam, and its character comes from the villus — shallow natural lakes that hold water long after the surrounding forest has dried out. Animals come to them, and a good tracker plans the drive around whichever ones are currently productive.
This drive is timed to one of the two edges of the day. The sunrise option enters as the gates open, when the light is low, the air is still cool and leopards are most likely to be out on the sand tracks. The sunset option runs through the last hours of light, when the villus fill with deer and buffalo and the sky over the water is at its best for photographs. Either way you are inside the park for around four hours.
Wilpattu's headline animal is the leopard, and the park's density is respectable, but sightings depend on luck. What you can reasonably expect is sloth bear country in the fruiting months, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, buffalo, mugger crocodiles at the villu margins, and strong birdlife.
You travel in an open 4x4 with a driver who also acts as tracker and guide. The vehicle is your own rather than a shared shuttle, so the pace of the drive is yours to set within park rules.
The main thing to weigh is where you start from. Wilpattu is far from Colombo — roughly a three to four hour drive each way — so a Colombo pickup turns this into a very long day, ten hours or more with most of it on the road. If you are staying in Anuradhapura, Negombo or near the entrance at Hunuwilagama, the same drive fits comfortably into half a day. Choose the pickup option that matches where you actually are.

Activity with a local guide and a driver who did their best to let us see all kinds of animals. We were finally able to see the famous leopard. Regarding the company, GetYourGuide hires a local company that contacts you. There is a bit of misinformation about the meeting point and about who is going to meet you. It's not a serious product!
We had a great experience with Tiger safari! Our tour guide and the driver were exceptionally kind and worked out so we could see most of the animals in Wilpattu. We booked the half day safari and we got the chance to see leopards, buffaloes, peacocks, monkeys, crocodiles and a lot of birds!
We saw almost every kind of species in the park. Our driver Yala and the guide Avishka were amazing! Really Nice people, who love their job, kind and very helpfull. We spent one of the best days in lifes… thank you both ❤️
It was a very good experience. You pay a little less than when you book at a lodge or something. Our ranger was young, but he knew all about the animals. Very friendly, and we drove through the entire park within the time. He even came to pick us up an hour early. Because of this, we saw two leopards! Very cool! Thank you 🙏🏼
The transportation went very well; everything was perfectly organized. The driver and live guide were very committed and did everything to allow us to see as much as possible. I even think they made a detour at the end so that we could see the elephants. I would definitely recommend it; it was great!

Today I had a wonderful experience at Will Pau National Park. The guide and his driver were truly attentive to my every need and answered all my questions. We toured the entire morning in the Jeep and were lucky enough to see several animals, including a leopard and an elephant. I highly recommend this experience.
The transportation from Negombo was great; a good car ride. The guide was able to provide us with a lot of information about the different animal species and always spotted them quickly so that he could show them to us.
