Where to Stay in Siem Reap: Five Areas, and Who Each One Suits

Siem Reap is about four kilometres across and a tuk-tuk crosses it for a couple of dollars. Nowhere you would book is far from anywhere else, which means the usual question - how close am I to things - is the wrong one.

The real question is how close am I to Pub Street, which is loud until two in the morning in a way that carries.

Old Market / Pub Street. The centre. Walk to everything, eat at midnight, and hear the bass through the window. Right for a two-night trip and for people who want the noise. Wrong for anyone starting at 04:30 for sunrise, which is most people.

Wat Bo, east of the river. The best all-round answer. Five to fifteen minutes' walk from the old market over a footbridge, quiet residential streets, a good concentration of mid-range hotels with pools and of the better small restaurants. If you only take one recommendation from this page, take this one.

Sok San Road, west of the centre, is the budget and backpacker strip - hostels, cheap guesthouses, a second cluster of bars. Good value, walkable to Pub Street, noticeably less polished.

Charles de Gaulle, the road out to the temples, holds most of the large resorts. Quiet, garden grounds, closest to Angkor, and dead at night - you will tuk-tuk in for dinner every evening.

North along the river is where several of the boutique and heritage properties sit, in among trees. Quiet, characterful, a ten-minute ride to town.

Siem Reap is one of the best-value destinations in Asia, and the gap between a cheap room and a lovely one is smaller than almost anywhere.

Hostel dorm USD 6-12. Guesthouse double USD 15-30, and at USD 25 you will often have a pool.

Good mid-range hotel with a pool and breakfast USD 40-80. This is the sweet spot and it buys something that would cost four times as much in Thailand.

Boutique and heritage USD 90-200.

The well-known luxury properties run USD 250 and up, and Siem Reap has several genuinely world-class ones.

Seasonality is real. The 20 December to 5 January peak takes rates to two or three times the annual average with minimum stays attached. November and mid-January to February are 30-50% above low season with good availability. May to September is 30-50% below peak, and a very good hotel becomes ordinary money - see when to visit for what you trade for that.

A pool is not a luxury here, it is the thing that makes the middle of the day survivable from March to May. Filter for it before you filter for anything else.

The airport moved. Siem Reap-Angkor International opened in October 2023 about 45 kilometres east, a 45 to 60 minute drive. Hotel listings written before that still say ten minutes. Ask whether an airport transfer is included; many hotels include one and it is worth real money now.

Free tuk-tuk to the temples is offered by a lot of hotels and is worth more than a breakfast upgrade. A temple day is USD 18-25 of transport.

Early breakfast. You are leaving at 04:30 for sunrise. A hotel that will do a packed breakfast box, or that opens the kitchen at 04:00, is doing you a genuine favour. Ask.

Pub Street noise carries further than the map suggests, particularly across the river on a still night. If you are a light sleeper, Wat Bo's back streets or Charles de Gaulle.

Construction. Siem Reap rebuilt most of its main roads in 2020-2023 and building continues. Recent reviews are worth more than photographs here.

Cash. Most small guesthouses want US dollars and many add a card fee. Bring clean, untorn notes - damaged bills get refused.

Two nights is a stopover. One temple day, and you will wish you had more.

Three nights is the honest minimum and what most people should book. Arrive, two temple days with the three-day pass spread across them, leave. Our three-day itinerary sets it out.

Four nights is the sweet spot, and the fourth night is the one that changes the trip - it buys either the Tonle Sap or the far temples without dropping anything.

Five or more and you reach Koh Ker, Preah Vihear, Battambang as a day trip, and the countryside. Few people regret it.

One booking tip specific to the pass: the three-day Angkor pass is valid on any three days inside a ten-day window, so extra nights never mean wasted ticket. Spreading temple days out is free, and it is the single best thing you can do for how much you actually enjoy the temples.
