What Zhujiajiao Is and Why It's the Easy Option
Zhujiajiao is a canal town roughly an hour from central Shanghai, one of several so-called 'water towns' in the Yangtze delta region built around a network of canals, stone bridges and Ming-and-Qing-era buildings that once formed the region's trading infrastructure before roads replaced waterways. It's the most practical day-trip option from Shanghai specifically because of the distance — close enough for a genuine half-day trip without eating your whole day in transit, unlike the more distant water towns favored by some tour itineraries.
The old town itself is free to walk — narrow lanes, stone bridges (the Fangsheng Bridge, a five-arch Ming-era bridge, is the town's most photographed structure), and canal-front teahouses and shops. Individual historic houses and the signature gondola boat rides are ticketed separately, generally inexpensive individually but worth budgeting for since the boat ride is the activity most visitors actually remember.
