Arashiyama se llena. El bosque de bambu, el puente y Tenryu-ji absorben la mayor parte de una manana y la mayor parte de la multitud, y a primera hora de la tarde muchos visitantes buscan algo que hacer que no sea hacer fila. Este taller es una buena respuesta, y a este precio esta cerca de ser la hora practica mas economica de Kioto.

Comienza eligiendo la madera. Se incluyen tres tipos y hay mas de diez disponibles, cada una con un grano, color y olor diferentes, las maderas mas claras son mas blandas bajo la cepilladora, las oscuras premium mantienen mejor el filo y cuestan un extra. Su pieza en bruto va sobre un soporte y la da forma con una cepilladora de mano, que es la parte que sorprende a la gente: la herramienta hace el trabajo si su angulo es correcto, y hacerlo mal produce un resultado inmediato y obvio. Sigue el papel de lija, luego una capa de aceite natural que resalta el grano y lo sella.

El grabado esta disponible si quiere su nombre en kanji o el tipo de madera marcado en el par terminado. Todo toma una hora, se proporciona todo, y el personal trabaja en ingles en todo momento. No se asume ninguna habilidad y nada lo bastante afilado para preocuparse con ninos mayores.

El taller esta en el segundo piso de un edificio en Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, subiendo las escaleras a la izquierda de la entrada, a pocos minutos del templo y el bosque. El personal tambien reparte consejos genuinamente utiles para el resto de Arashiyama, que senderos se despejan, donde esta realmente la entrada del parque de monos, que vale la pena tener antes de volver a salir.

Got caught by the rain in Arashiyama, so we ducked into this chopstick-making workshop — and it turned out to be the highlight of our day! Warm, calm, and totally hands-on. Our friendly host Utako walked us through every step, and even the kids got right into shaping and smoothing their own chopsticks. They wrapped them up beautifully too, so we've got a little souvenir that actually reminds us of the fun (not just the downpour!). Perfect way to turn a rainy day around. Highly recommend!!!!

Great experience overall. The instructors did a great job. They were very friendly and helpful. We left with a beautiful pair of chopsticks. The only downside I found was that the all the extras (different wood selection, engraving) were really overpriced.

It was also great to be able to enjoy a one-hour workshop while sightseeing in Arashiyama. Making something myself that I can keep as a souvenir and a special memory of my trip made the experience even more meaningful. I would definitely recommend it!
