Guided Tours & Things to Do in Kyoto

Best Time to Visit Kyoto

The best times to visit Kyoto are spring (late March to mid-April) for cherry blossoms and autumn (mid-November to early December) for spectacular maple foliage. These are also the busiest seasons, so early mornings are best. Summer is hot and humid; winter is cold but peaceful with fewer crowds.

FAQs About Kyoto Tours

How many days do I need in Kyoto?

Two to three days covers the highlights — a day for eastern Kyoto (Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion), a day for the northwest (Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama bamboo grove), and a third for gardens, tea ceremony and Nishiki Market. Add a half-day trip to nearby Nara for the deer park and Todai-ji.

How do I avoid the crowds at Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama?

Arrive early — ideally before 8:30 AM — or visit in the late afternoon/evening. Fushimi Inari is open 24 hours and is magical (and quiet) at dawn or after dark. A local guide can time your route to hit each site at its calmest and take you to the lesser-known upper trails most visitors miss.

Can I experience a real tea ceremony or wear a kimono in Kyoto?

Yes — Kyoto is the best place in Japan for both. Authentic tea ceremonies are offered by tea houses and machiya townhouses, and kimono rental shops near Gion and Kiyomizu let you stroll the historic streets in traditional dress. Guided experiences ensure you get the genuine, respectful version rather than a tourist gimmick.
