The 5:30 boat ride at dawn was worth every minute of the early alarm. Watching the sun come up over the ghats while pilgrims bathed and prayed felt like stepping into another century. A wonderful and thorough introduction to Varanasi, though be ready for how hot and humid it gets by midday. The morning on the river was magical and our guide was excellent, genuinely knowledgeable and warm. Just know the day is long and the old city lanes are packed and a bit overwhelming. Bring water and sensible shoes and you'll love it.

We did the higher option and it was money well spent. No fussing over entry fees or where to eat, just a seamless day led by a guide who clearly loves his city.
