Arashiyama se remplit. La foret de bambous, le pont et Tenryu-ji absorbent la plus grande partie d'une matinee et la plus grande partie de la foule, et au debut de l'apres-midi beaucoup de visiteurs cherchent quelque chose a faire qui ne soit pas faire la queue. Cet atelier est une bonne reponse, et a ce prix, c'est proche de l'heure pratique la moins chere de Kyoto.

Vous commencez par choisir le bois. Trois types sont inclus et plus de dix sont disponibles, chacun avec un grain, une couleur et une odeur differents, les bois plus clairs sont plus tendres sous le rabot, les bois sombres premium tiennent mieux le fil et coutent un supplement. Votre piece brute est placee sur un support et vous la facomnez avec un rabot a main, ce qui est la partie qui surprend les gens : l'outil fait le travail si votre angle est correct, et se tromper produit un resultat immediat et evident. Le papier de verre suit, puis une couche d'huile naturelle qui fait ressortir le grain et le scelle.

La gravure est disponible si vous voulez votre nom en kanji ou le type de bois marque sur la paire finie. Le tout prend une heure, tout est fourni, et le personnel travaille en anglais tout au long. Aucune competence n'est presumee et rien d'assez tranchant pour inquieter avec des enfants plus ages.

L'atelier se trouve au deuxieme etage d'un batiment a Sagatenryuji Susukinobabacho, en haut des escaliers a gauche de l'entree, a quelques minutes du temple et de la foret. Le personnel distribue aussi des conseils vraiment utiles pour le reste d'Arashiyama, quels chemins s'eclaircissent, ou se trouve vraiment l'entree du parc des singes, ce qui vaut le coup d'avoir avant de repartir.

Si vous preferez fabriquer des baguettes a Nara, nous proposons un atelier separe la-bas ; celui-ci est l'option de Kyoto et les deux ne sont pas lies.

Got caught by the rain in Arashiyama, so we ducked into this chopstick-making workshop — and it turned out to be the highlight of our day! Warm, calm, and totally hands-on. Our friendly host Utako walked us through every step, and even the kids got right into shaping and smoothing their own chopsticks. They wrapped them up beautifully too, so we've got a little souvenir that actually reminds us of the fun (not just the downpour!). Perfect way to turn a rainy day around. Highly recommend!!!!

Great experience overall. The instructors did a great job. They were very friendly and helpful. We left with a beautiful pair of chopsticks. The only downside I found was that the all the extras (different wood selection, engraving) were really overpriced.

It was also great to be able to enjoy a one-hour workshop while sightseeing in Arashiyama. Making something myself that I can keep as a souvenir and a special memory of my trip made the experience even more meaningful. I would definitely recommend it!
