D'Ella a Sigiriya peut se faire via Kandy, qui est la route animee, ou via Mahiyanganaya, qui est la route calme. Ce transfert prend l'itineraire oriental: en descendant l'escarpement d'Uva, en sortant sur la plaine de la zone seche, et vers le nord jusqu'au triangle culturel.
Les Vedda sont le peuple indigene du Sri Lanka, presents sur l'ile bien avant l'arrivee cinghalaise que les chroniques datent du cinquieme siecle avant notre ere. Quelques communautes subsistent, principalement autour de Dambana pres de Mahiyanganaya, et une visite implique de rencontrer des membres de la communaute, de voir les techniques de chasse et de cueillette qu'ils enseignent encore, et d'entendre leur propre recit d'une histoire habituellement racontee a leur sujet plutot que par eux.
Il vaut la peine d'etre honnete sur ce que c'est. Ces visites sont un moyen de subsistance et elles sont en partie mises en scene. Cela ne les rend pas sans valeur, la communaute controle la presentation et l'argent reste local, mais quiconque les vend comme une rencontre avec des gens non touches par le monde moderne ne dit pas la verite.
Mahiyanganaya elle-meme possede l'un des plus anciens stupas du Sri Lanka, cense abriter des reliques de cheveux et marquer le site de la premiere visite du Bouddha sur l'ile.

Roughly every two hours, but Sri Lanka Railways runs 30-90 minutes late routinely, so any blog quoting exact times is quoting a timetable rather than reality. Ask at Ella station on the morning — staff will tell you what is expected and how late it is running.
Little Adam's Peak for almost everyone — 45 minutes up a stepped path for arguably the better view, out through the Ella Gap. Ella Rock is three hours return, largely unsigned, and people get lost on it regularly; take a guide or an offline map. Compared in full here.

January to March for the clearest Ella Gap views. June to September is dry but hazy from the Uva wind; October to December is wet. The real risk is cloud, not rain — at 1,000 m the view can be inside a cloud on a dry day, and mornings are clearer than afternoons in every month. See best time to visit Ella.

Do everything before nine in the morning. The Gap view is clearer in the morning in every month, Little Adam's Peak has a queue by nine, and the Nine Arch Bridge has hundreds of people on it by ten.

Roughly June to September, peaking in August, when the shrinking reservoir exposes fresh grass and several hundred elephants converge. Outside those months the herds disperse and you get a normal safari. Operators switch between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu depending on where the herds are — that is them doing their job.
