A genuinely brilliant day out. Our guide met us at the hotel right on time and clearly knew the history of Elephanta inside out, the story behind the Trimurti carving gave me goosebumps. The private car meant we never felt rushed, and the skip-the-line at the caves saved us a proper wait. Worth every rupee for the two of us.

Loved that everything was sorted for us, ferry tickets, the little toy train, entrance fees, all included so no faffing about with queues. The crossing over the Arabian Sea was gorgeous and the guide pointed out the skyline on the way back. The Shiva sculptures in the caves are extraordinary. Ten hours flew by.

Really informative and well organised tour. My only heads-up is the climb to the caves, around 120 steps in serious heat, so start early like our guide suggested. He was patient and let us rest as we went. The private car was a cool refuge between stops. Bring water beyond the one bottle they hand you on the island.

Precisely the private experience we hoped for. The driver was punctual and courteous, and the guide adapted the city portion to what we wanted to see before the ferry. Elephanta itself is unmissable, the rock-cut temples are far more impressive in person than in photos. Excellent value considering everything the price covered.

We travelled with my parents and the flexibility of a private tour was perfect. The toy train from the jetty was a nice touch for them, and the guide arranged a carrying chair for my mum on the steps. He balanced the Mumbai landmarks and the caves beautifully. Warm, knowledgeable and never pushy about tips.

January was the ideal time to do this, dry and pleasant the whole day. The ferry ride is about an hour each way and surprisingly scenic. Our guide made the ancient carvings come alive with stories I'd never have picked up alone. Hotel pickup and drop-off made the logistics effortless. Highly recommend for a first Mumbai visit.

A wonderful tour overall with a superb, well-spoken guide. Honest note, it is a long day and the island can get crowded with tour groups by late morning, so the early ferry really matters. The caves were the clear highlight for us. The included skip-the-line and water bottle were appreciated small touches on a hot day.

From the Gateway of India to the Trimurti statue, every part of this day was handled with care. Comfortable air-conditioned car, a driver who knew Mumbai's traffic tricks, and a guide who clearly loves the caves' history. Having the ferry and entrance all pre-arranged took the stress out completely. One of the best guided days we've had in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll explore Mumbai's iconic landmarks, colonial-era architecture and bustling streets with your private guide, then take a ferry across the Arabian Sea to Elephanta Island to see the UNESCO-listed rock-cut cave temples. The highlight is the 5th-8th century sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva, including the magnificent Trimurti carving. It's a full, well-paced day at $136 per booking covering both the city and the caves.
This is a fully private tour for your group only. You get a private air-conditioned car with an English-speaking driver plus a dedicated English-speaking guide, so the pace, stops and timing flex around you. If you'd prefer a private city tour that swaps the caves for a deeper local experience, see our Private Mumbai Sightseeing & Dharavi Slum Tour.
Yes. The $136 price includes the ferry tickets, the Elephanta Caves entrance fee, the toy train on the island, skip-the-line access at the caves, and a bottle of water on arrival. There are no hidden ticket costs for the core itinerary, though a small island entry fee collected by local authorities and any tips are typically not covered.
Yes, hotel pickup and drop-off in Mumbai are included in your private AC car. Your driver will collect you directly from your hotel lobby at the agreed morning time and return you there at the end of the day, so you don't need to arrange any separate transport.
Reaching the caves involves climbing roughly 120 stone steps from the jetty, though a toy train (included) covers the flat stretch from the pier. The paths are uneven and rocky in places. Most reasonably mobile travelers manage fine at a relaxed pace, and porters with carrying chairs are usually available on the island for a fee if the steps are too much.
An early morning start is best so you cross to the island before the midday heat and beat the largest crowds. The most comfortable months are November to February, when Mumbai is dry and warm. Avoid the monsoon (roughly June to September), as ferry services to Elephanta can be suspended during rough seas or heavy rain.
Wear comfortable closed shoes with grip for the steps and uneven cave floors, plus light breathable clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the exposed island. Bring a little cash for snacks, tips and the small local island fee. A bottle of water is provided on arrival, but carrying extra in Mumbai's heat is wise.
Yes, families enjoy it, especially the ferry ride and the toy train that kids love. For older travelers, the main consideration is the climb of around 120 steps at the caves; the pace is private and flexible, so you can rest as needed, and carrying-chair porters are available on the island. Let us know your group's needs when booking so your guide can adjust.
The ferry across the harbour takes roughly one hour each way from the Gateway of India jetty. It's a scenic crossing over the Arabian Sea with views back toward the Mumbai skyline. Your guide handles the ferry tickets, so you simply board and enjoy the ride.
Absolutely, photography is allowed and the Trimurti statue and Shiva sculptures are wonderfully photogenic. Morning light streaming into the cave temples is ideal for the carvings. The ferry crossing and the view of the Gateway of India also make great shots, so keep your camera or phone handy throughout the day.
Meals are not included beyond the complimentary bottle of water on arrival at the island. There are simple snack stalls and cafes near the caves, and your guide can recommend good vegetarian and local spots in Mumbai for lunch. India caters extremely well to vegetarians, so dietary needs are easy to meet.
Yes, Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays, and ferries do not run to the island that day. If your Mumbai stay falls on a Monday, we recommend an alternative such as our Private Mumbai Sightseeing & Dharavi Slum Tour, or booking this tour for another day of your trip.
Your booking includes skip-the-line entry at the Elephanta Caves, so once you've crossed on the ferry and climbed to the cave complex, your guide handles ticketing and you head straight in without queuing at the entrance. Combined with an early start, this saves considerable time on a busy day.
We recommend booking with flexibility given that ferry schedules to Elephanta depend on weather. Full cancellation and refund terms are shown at checkout before you confirm; if seas are too rough for the crossing on your date, we'll work with you to reschedule or adjust the itinerary to Mumbai's city highlights.
Many visitors pair a day in Mumbai with a Taj Mahal excursion. If you'd like to add the Taj, consider our Same Day Taj Mahal Tour From Mumbai with Flight for a fly-in day trip, or the Overnight Taj Mahal Tour From Mumbai if you'd prefer a more relaxed two-day pace before or after your Elephanta day.
