Ten hours flew by. Our guide met us right at the hotel and had a real feel for pacing, giving us longer at the Gateway of India when we lingered for photos. The Dharavi walk was the part that stayed with me though, seeing the recycling and leather workshops explained with such respect. Having a private AC car in that heat was a small blessing.

Booked this for my wife and me and it was worth every dollar of the hundred. The chauffeur was calm in Mumbai traffic and our guide clearly knew Dharavi personally, greeting people as we walked the narrow lanes. He asked us not to photograph inside the homes, which I appreciated. A thoughtful, honest look at the city rather than a checklist of monuments.

A brilliantly balanced day. Colonial architecture and the seafront in the morning, then the energy of Dharavi's pottery and textile units after lunch. Our guide answered every question and never rushed us. Bottled water in the car was a nice touch. Being fully private meant we could tweak the route on the spot, which suited us perfectly.

Genuinely eye-opening and our guide was excellent, but be ready for the heat. We went in the late morning and the Dharavi walk on uneven ground got sweaty and a bit tiring by the end of a long ten-hour day. Start early if you can. The private car and cold water helped a lot, and I'd still recommend it without hesitation.

One of the most memorable days of our India trip. What I loved was how the guide connected the grand landmarks with the working life of Dharavi, so the city made sense as a whole. He was patient with my English and full of little stories. The car was comfortable and clean, and pickup from our hotel was exactly on time.

We travelled with our teenagers and this held their attention all day, which is no small thing. The Dharavi section sparked the best conversations we had on the whole holiday. Our guide was warm and never preachy, and the private format meant we set the pace. Great value split between four of us. The seafront promenade at golden hour was gorgeous.

A rich, thoughtful tour and our guide was lovely and knowledgeable. My only note is that with entry stops, lunch and traffic, a couple of the landmark visits felt slightly rushed to fit everything into the day. That said, they clearly prioritised Dharavi, which was the highlight. Comfortable car, respectful approach, and I came away understanding Mumbai far better.

Exactly the private day we hoped for. From the colonial buildings to the coastal drive to the workshops of Dharavi, everything flowed and we never once felt like a number in a group. Our guide handled the touts near the Gateway so we could just enjoy it. Door-to-door service from the hotel and back made a hot, full day effortless.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a 10-hour private tour that pairs Mumbai's iconic sights with a guided walk through Dharavi. You'll take in landmarks like the Gateway of India, colonial-era districts and the coastal promenades, then step into Dharavi to see its small-scale industries and community life up close. It's designed as a balanced day: grand monuments in the morning, real neighbourhood insight in the afternoon.
Yes. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, and all sightseeing is done in a private air-conditioned car with your own chauffeur. Just share your hotel name when you book and your guide will confirm a start time. Because it's fully private, pickup from most central and south Mumbai hotels is straightforward.
Yes. The single Private Mumbai Sightseeing & Dharavi Slum Tour option at $100 includes Entry/Admission to the sites visited, so you won't be paying extra at the gate. It also covers your English-speaking guide, the private AC car with chauffeur, and bottled water. The price is for the private experience rather than per-head, which makes it strong value for couples, families or small groups.
The landmark portion is fairly relaxed since the private car drops you close to each stop, but the Dharavi walking section involves narrow lanes, uneven ground and some tight passageways. There are no long climbs, but you'll be on your feet for stretches at a time. Wear comfortable closed shoes and let your guide know if you'd like a gentler pace.
Yes. The walk is run to be respectful and dignified, focusing on Dharavi's recycling, leather, pottery and textile workshops and its entrepreneurial spirit rather than treating anyone as a spectacle. Out of courtesy, photography inside homes and workshops is often restricted, so please always ask your guide before taking photos of people. Landmark spots like the Gateway of India are, of course, perfect for pictures.
It can work well for both, thanks to the private car and flexible pace. Older travellers appreciate not having to walk between sights, while families should note that the Dharavi portion involves narrow, sometimes busy lanes that may not suit very young children or strollers. Because it's private, your guide can shorten stops or adjust the route to keep everyone comfortable across the long day.
Plan for a full 10-hour day. Most guests start in the morning, around 8:30 to 9:30am, which gives good light at the Gateway of India and cooler air for the Dharavi walk before the midday heat. Your exact start time is confirmed with your guide after booking and can flex around your hotel and schedule.
November to February is ideal, with dry, pleasant weather that's comfortable for both sightseeing and walking. March to May gets hot and humid, and the June-to-September monsoon brings heavy rain that can make the Dharavi lanes muddy. The tour runs year-round in the private AC car, but the cooler months are the most enjoyable underfoot.
Wear light, breathable clothing and comfortable closed-toe shoes you don't mind getting a little dusty, since Dharavi's lanes can be uneven. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is respectful for the neighbourhood walk. Bring sunscreen, a hat and your phone or camera; bottled water is already provided in the car to keep you hydrated through the day.
Meals aren't included, but bottled water is provided and your guide can arrange a lunch stop at a spot that suits you. Mumbai is very vegetarian-friendly, with excellent thalis, street snacks like vada pav and pav bhaji, and plenty of Jain and vegan-aware options. Tell your guide about any dietary needs and they'll point you to the right place.
Yes. With a local English-speaking guide who knows the community and routes, the Dharavi walk is safe and well-managed. As anywhere in a busy city, keep valuables secure and stay with your guide through the narrower lanes. The private format means you're never navigating unfamiliar areas alone.
It's fully private. The $100 covers your own group with a dedicated English-speaking guide and private chauffeur-driven AC car, so you won't be pooled with other travellers. That means the pace, stops and start time all revolve around you. If you'd prefer a tour that adds an island excursion instead of Dharavi, consider the Mumbai Private Tour with Elephanta Caves & City Highlights.
Yes. Because the day is private, your guide can spend longer at the sights you care about most and trim ones you're less keen on, within the 10-hour window. If you'd rather swap in a nearby monument or add a shopping or food stop, just ask on the day. It's your tour, so flexibility is part of the appeal.
Many visitors pair a Mumbai city day like this one with a trip to Agra. If you're short on time, the Same Day Taj Mahal Tour From Mumbai with Flight lets you see the Taj and return the same evening, while the Overnight Taj Mahal Tour From Mumbai gives a more relaxed pace. For a bigger loop, there's also the 3-Day Luxury Taj Mahal & Pink City Jaipur Tour by Air.
Booking is done online in a couple of minutes; once confirmed, you'll receive your voucher and your guide will reach out to arrange the pickup time and hotel details. We recommend free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, though you should always check the terms shown at checkout for this tour. If your plans are uncertain, book early and adjust the date with your guide if needed.
