Full description
This is a 1.5-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Tenryuji Temple, Sagano Bamboo Grove and Togetsu-kyo Bridge. It is run by Japan Guide Stars, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Arashiyama, on Kyoto's western edge, is the bamboo grove, the Togetsukyo bridge over the Katsura river, the gardens of Tenryu-ji and the monkey park on the hill above. The bamboo path is about 500 metres and is photographed empty in every guidebook because those photographs are taken before 7:30; by mid-morning it is a procession. Rickshaw runs, the Sagano scenic railway along the gorge, and boat rides down the Hozu rapids all start here. Autumn colour peaks in the second half of November and cherry blossom around the first week of April.
The price covers Entry ticket to the Tenryuji Temple and Guide. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Chopsticks Studio Kyoto. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Japan Guide Stars before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

I booked this last minute and so glad I did. Uta was amazing. She was knowledgeable, witty and made the walking tour interesting. It's a lot of walking so wear the proper shoes. My family was a little slow but she waited and surprising packed a lot in that 1.5 hrs Aimee assisted Uta, she kept us corraled and took pictures for everyone. If you hate long tours or are short on time this is a great tour.
My tour was awesome it was supposed to be a group tour but ended up being a private tour since the other person canceled. Leo was super nice and explained to me so many things about the Arashiyama area.
We were met by a lovely young man Leo who was full of information about the area, history of Japan and clearly loved sharing his knowledge and passion for the places he brought us. We never would have seen as much or understood what we were looking at if we had visited on our own. We had a great tour!!
Valeria was an excellent guide! I loved the way she explained historic relevance of the tour, and was super friendly! I would recommend the tour
We were lucky to get tickets for a morning booking in the rain and we were the only participants in that time slot. Sebastian and Jenny led us on a fantastic informative guided walk and we learned about the gardens and even more importantly they took the time to answer our questions about Japan in general and we learned so much more than expected. Highly recommend them as tour guides.
It was an amazing experience, our guide was exvellent.
We had a very enjoyable and interesting tour with our tour guide Emelyn. She had in depth knowledge and explained everything very well and with great enthusiasm. Clearly she enjoys leading this tour! We enjoyed listening to her and learning about the history and culture of the area. Then we made chopsticks after the tour and we are so glad we did that activity too! The staff was super helpful - it felt like a fun hangout - and it is a wonderful momento to take home. The chopsticks were beautiful, as there were many different types of wood to choose from, and engraved with our names in Japanese
Guide was very knowledgeable of the local area and had good tips of where to go.
Our family of four had a fantastic tour and we loved our time with Uta and Valeria. They were so knowledgeable and shared so many interesting facts and stories with us, tailored to all of our interests. A super special and memorable part of our trip!
Masaru was excellent in informing the group on the different historical points - well worth every penny
This was an amazing walking tour, my guide Uta is such an amazing person and guide who has a vast amount of knowledge about the locations / area and Japan itself. I'd recommend this tour to anyone.
