Full description

This is a 4-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Tenryuji Temple, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and Nonomiya Shrine. It is run by Travel Japan Together, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Arashiyama, on Kyoto's western edge, is the bamboo grove, the Togetsukyo bridge over the Katsura river, the gardens of Tenryu-ji and the monkey park on the hill above. The bamboo path is about 500 metres and is photographed empty in every guidebook because those photographs are taken before 7:30; by mid-morning it is a procession. Rickshaw runs, the Sagano scenic railway along the gorge, and boat rides down the Hozu rapids all start here. Autumn colour peaks in the second half of November and cherry blossom around the first week of April.

Kosuke sent us a message the day before to confirm our meeting point. He met us on time and took us on an amazing tour despite the fact the two of us were the only participants. He went at a reasonable pace, and spoke excellent English. He was lovely and answered our questions, not only about the wonderful sites we visited, but also about Japanese customs and culture. We learned lots about the proper way to pray at the shrine and in the temple, we tasted matcha ice cream, and visited a wonderful temple, the stunning bamboo forest, and the monkey reserve. Thank you for an amazing tour!

Erika was very knowledgeable and showed us so many amazing little things in the temples that we otherwise would of missed. we were very blessed to have her as our guide. The tour was a perfect mix of history, pictures and fun. Seeing the monkeys was a wonderful experience but very steep 20 minute climb up but worth every step. The scenery we saw in the bamboo forest and temples was beautiful. Thank you so much Erika it was a real pleasure to meet you x
