Full description

This is a 5-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Fushimi Inari Taisha, Nijo Castle and Kinkaku-ji. It is run by Planet Japan合同会社, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of Inari, the deity of rice and business, and its thousand-plus vermilion torii gates, each donated by a company or family, run in tunnels up the 233-metre Mount Inari behind the main hall. The full loop to the summit is about four kilometres and two hours; most visitors turn back at the Yotsutsuji viewpoint halfway. It is open 24 hours and free, which makes it the one big Kyoto sight you can do at dawn or after dark, when the gates are empty and lit. By nine in the morning the lower tunnels are a slow queue. The fox statues carry keys to the rice granary in their mouths.

The price covers insights. It does not cover Public transportation tickets and tickets, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.

Planet Japan合同会社 sends the meeting point and time by email as soon as the booking is confirmed. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Planet Japan合同会社 before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

We had an incredible tour today, and it was all thanks to our excellent guide, Tom. From the moment we met him at Kyoto Station, he put us completely at ease and made the entire day an absolute joy. Coming from Kyoto, Tom has a wealth of local knowledge that he was eager to share. Because he follows the Buddhist (Zen) religion, he was able to give us really unique and interesting insights into why things are the way they are at the temples, which added so much depth to the experience. He even took us to a famous Kyoto sweet factory shop on the way to our last temple (Kinkaku-ji) where we sampl

We had a great day and our guide, Tom, was very informative! It was a great way to see these sites. We took public transportation all day, but Tom made it easy. He was a wealth of knowledge and made sure to touch on our interests. Would highly recommend!

Our wonderful guide Romi really made this trip for us! She was so friendly and extremely knowledgable, we covered more and learnt more in 5 hours than we could ever have learnt ourselves. This was my second trip to Kyoto but I learnt so much more on this tour and if you want to cover 3 top sites in a short time then this is for you! The highlight for me was Fushimi Inari and my partner loved Nijo Castle. Rumi was great at bringing history to life and her enthusiasm was infectious. You could go at your own pace and having Rumi with us made everything easy. Don’t miss this trip!

Ken was an incredible tour guide and was like having a knowledgeable friend showing you his city. He was wonderfully attentive to our whole group, especially my older parents, and adapted effortlessly to our pace and interests. For example he got us on the quickest route to our hotel in Osaka and he even accompanied us on the train! Would highly recommend him and the early start tour.

This tour was the perfect way to experience the city—not just by seeing famous sights, but by truly understanding the history and culture behind them. The highlight for me was Fushimi Inari Taisha. The guide explained the meaning of the torii gates and why this shrine is still deeply connected to people’s daily lives. It completely changed how I viewed the scenery. At Nijō Castle, I learned not only about the Tokugawa shogunate, but also about how architecture was designed to reflect power and control. The explanations were fascinating and easy to follow. And Kinkaku-ji was absolutely stunning

Handy made this an interesting and memorable experience. We could not have seen these places and travelled all over Kyoto without him. We saved at least half a day of our time thanks to Handy.

A perfectly organized tour of Kyoto's top sites. Our guide was a star, skillfully navigating us away from the crowds which made the experience so much more enjoyable. We learned and saw more in one morning than we could have in two days on our own. This tour is a game-changer for seeing Kyoto efficiently. Highly recommend!

Shoes off at every hall, quiet voices, and no photographs inside the halls unless a sign allows it. At a shrine, rinse hands and mouth at the basin, then bow twice, clap twice and bow once; at a temple, hands together without clapping. Dress is relaxed, but shoulders and knees covered is the courteous choice.

Late March to early April for cherry blossom, or mid-to-late November for peak autumn foliage. Kyoto sits in a basin and runs hotter in summer and colder in winter than Tokyo, even at a similar latitude. Full month-by-month figures are in our best time to visit Kyoto guide.
Kyoto never built an extensive subway — just two lines (Karasuma and Tozai) — so the city bus network does most of the work, especially for Higashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Ginkakuji. Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are best reached by JR rail instead. See getting around Kyoto.
Three days covers the essentials well: a day for Higashiyama and Gion, a day for Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji, and a day for Fushimi Inari plus a Nara or Uji day trip. Our 3-day Kyoto itinerary has the full route with timing.
Arrive by 6:30-7am — the shrine is open 24/7 and free, and most visitors only walk the first 20-30 minutes anyway. Past that point the crowds thin out fast. Full hike details in our Fushimi Inari guide.
Yes — it's a public path with no entrance fee and no set hours. The trade-off is that it gets shoulder-to-shoulder by mid-morning; arrive before 8am for a nearly empty walk. See the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest guide.
Kyoto restricts photography on certain private alleys in Gion after complaints about tourists chasing and blocking geiko and maiko, with fines for violators. Public streets like Hanamikoji-dori remain open, but never chase, touch or block a real geiko/maiko anywhere. Full etiquette in our Gion geisha district guide.
Yudofu (simmered tofu, best near Nanzen-ji or Arashiyama), kaiseki and shojin ryori temple cuisine, and Nishiki Market's stalls of tako tamago and fresh yuba. Uji, just south of the city, is one of Japan's top matcha-growing regions. See the Kyoto food guide.
