Full description
This is a 2-hour experience from Kyoto, built around Gion, Yasaka Shrine and Nene no Michi. It is run by Traveling Tokyo, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers guide, Historical insights into the Yasaka Shrine and Photos during the tour. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
Starbucks Coffee - Kyoto Gion Hotel. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Traveling Tokyo before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Peter was an excellent tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and brought us to some amazing sites around Gion. The tour was a comfortable blend of walking and stops.
Peter was a great guide, so knowledgeable and we covered so much of Kyoto. was lovely and atmospheric on a dark and damp September evening.
Dearer was really great. He answered all our questions and kept the tour interactive. I recommend
Peter was a brilliant guide highly knowledgeable. He also had a bit of fun with the group. Highly recommend the tour.
William was an excellent guide, he had a great understanding of everything along with being able to answer all of the questions thrown at him. He made the entire experience feel more like going out with a friend, he even personally guided us to a brilliant ramen place afterwards. 10/10 it was pretty Zen.
Peter was very pleasant and informative. I would definitely recommend.
The walking tour was perfect. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Kyoto. Pedro is an amazing guide and we learned a lot about Japan culture, history and Gion's district. We could also ask any questions about Japan during the tour.
Peter was a marvelous guide! Really interesting and informative. Always honest as well 😂 Every penny worth it!
We had a truly fantastic tour with William and Akira (trainee). I would highly recommend them as guides, as we saw so much—even extra sights; it felt almost like a private tour. They were very friendly and approachable. We really enjoyed the experience; we did the tour after dark, but we plan to walk it again in daylight now, given all the stories and information we heard. Once again, a huge thank you for a wonderful evening!
Malu contacted us before the tour to provide a link to the convenient meeting spot. She gathered the group of 11 tourists and took us through the streets of Gion, explaining the role of Geishas and their rigorous training in Kyoto. She was very knowledgeable and answered many questions about life in Japan. She walked the group through areas touching on Shrines and Temples and some of the history of Kyoto which has survived over time and retained many of its historic buildings. It was an informative and pleasant tour, Malu was a wonderful and patient guide. Be sure to walk close to her in order
