This is a 1-hour experience in Kyoto, built around Gion, Kyoto and Kyoto Prefecture. It is run by Traveling Tokyo, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.

Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.

Great experience with Nette! She taught us a lot about chopsticks and also Japan in general. We chose the easiest (cheapest) wood and an engraving (extra cost) but there was no forcing behind it :) We would definitely recommend it!

It was so much fun making our own chopsticks with Nette! She helped and guided us the whole time! We could even choose our own wood and keep some of the scrap wood (the scent is amazing). We even got them engraved and had a wonderful chat with Nette. She also took pictures and videos for us! Absolute 10 out of 10

This was so fun. Great activity to do on a rainy day. Getting a specific engraving to commemorate the trip was also unique. One of the best souvenirs of this trip. Steve was also really helpful, kind, and knowledgeable.

Super easy to book and in a really nice tucked away setting. The timber I chose was dense, but Anton my instructor was very patient and helpful and let me start over with a new piece of timber. Would recommend to anyone in Kyoto
