Full description
This is a experience in Kyoto, built around Gion, Kamo River and Yasaka Shrine. It is run by Tour kyoto, an operator we book with directly rather than through a reseller, which is why we can hold your place with them before we treat your booking as final.
Gion is Kyoto's historic entertainment district, the streets of wooden machiya houses around Hanamikoji where the geiko and maiko of the Gion Kobu district still work. They are working professionals on their way to engagements, not performers for the street, and Kyoto has banned photography in the private lanes; an evening walk with a guide who explains the ochaya system is the respectful way to see it. Tea ceremony sessions in Gion teach the basic form of matcha preparation in an hour. Kimono rental for a day, with dressing and hair, is an established business around the district and is welcomed rather than resented.
The price covers guide, Walking tour, Free snacks and After care and recommends. It does not cover Food and Public transportation tickets, so budget for those separately. Everything included is listed in full on this page; if something is not on that list, assume it is not in the price.
394 Komeyachō, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8026, Japan. We need at least one day's notice, and we confirm the date with Tour kyoto before treating your booking as final. If they cannot take your date we tell you and refund you rather than leave you waiting.

Traveler Reviews
Simon provided a fantastic wealth of local knowledge for the trip for me and my two teenagers. He tailored it for what we would be interested in and his enthusiasm and passion certainly rubbed off. Friendly, informative, this really made the last night in Japan very special for us. Thank you so much, Simon.
What a fantastic tour. Simon gave a great introduction to Japan with the history of the Geisha and took us to some secluded parts of the Geisha districts. It was thoroughly enjoyable and value for money. Simon also recommended some restaurants, I went to one of them and wasn't disappointed. If I could give more stars I would. Thanks for making my Japan trip memorable. Nick from Pontefract England
Simon is very kind and explains things well, and he's always available to answer any questions you may have. He taught me a lot about Japanese culture and gave me tips on where to eat and where to go. He's an excellent guide, a kind and charismatic person. 10/10 ✨️
Great tour, really interesting, and great guide. Even his restaurant recommendation was amazing!
best ever. insightful, deep dive culture, patient and knowledgeable guide
Our Guide Cameron was absolutely Fantastic. You can tell he loves his job and is passionate about it. Our tour made us enjoy Gion District much more than we imagined after understanding a lot of the stories behind many of the spots. I highly recommend Cameron and o this Tour.
We had an amazing time exploring and understanding culture and history of Gion, Geisha , Kyoto and Japanese culture. He made it entertaining for our two teenage kids and also shared his recommendations for what we could explore further in Kyoto, eating places where locals would go, real treat was snack and Japanese souvenir a very nice and thoughtful touch. We learnt so much from Simon and visited viewpoints and hidden areas that we would have missed so easily.. he also made sure that we knew our way back to the hotel. If you are visiting Kyoto, we would 120% recommend Simon’s tours. Thank you
The tour was great, we saw lots and it was so nice to walk at night around those areas. Because, quiet and Simon was amazing! Gave us lots of information and explained many stories that made our tour more enjoyable, totally recommended! 😊 Thanks so much Simon!
Simon was an incredible guide! You can really see how much he loves what he does. He is passionate, knowledgeable, and truly cares about his customers. His passion for the city, its history, and its hidden gems shines through in every part of the tour. He answered all my questions with patience and insight, gave great local recommendations, and even went out of his way after the tour to help me find souvenirs (plus gifted me some too!). I learned so much and had a wonderful time. Thanks to Simon, my Kyoto experience was unforgettable. If you’re visiting Kyoto and want a tour that’s informative
Simon was an incredible and knowledgeable guide and helped us see an amazing view of Kyoto we otherwise wouldn’t have seen. Thanks Simon!
This was the highlight of our time in Kyoto. Simon was a brilliant guide who really brought the history of the area alive for us. We are still talking about it days later. Highly recommended.
